Ben Orchard, Adnams
Adnams is an independent values-based family business committed to a sustainable future. It has been brewing from its base at Southwold on the Suffolk coast for over 140 years and produces a range of cask, keg and bottled beers and award-winning spirits.
We are delighted to support the EADT Business Awards and in particular the Environment and Sustainability award, as they recognise businesses who share our values and commitment to the environment.
Our decision to sponsor this award was based on a firm commitment to ‘doing the right thing’; about providing a sustainable business that is a good neighbour to its community. We believe that at its simplest level sustainability is about longevity. Adnams has been in business since 1872 and plans to be around for many, many more years to come. At a deeper level it’s about building stronger relationships – with our people, our customers, our community and the wider world. That means developing an exceptional working culture at Adnams, managing our social and environmental impacts to deliver positive improvements and achieving better business results, on a consistent basis. It’s about ‘doing things right’ and being seen to do so.
We’re committed to managing the environmental impacts through business as usual, we want to make sure that our impacts are positive, and that people enjoy our presence; expressing the company’s values in ways which combine social and business benefits with long-term sustainable success. Being environmentally responsible brings with it real business benefits, we are able to measure and prove these, from the obvious such as cost savings from energy efficiency, to the less quantifiable such as our reputation and brand perception.
In the past year we switched the entire Adnams business to renewable sources of electricity, this has reduced our annual carbon emissions by over 1,000 tonnes of CO2, helping reduce our impact on climate change. In recent years we became the first brewery to carbon footprint all our bottled beers and this was followed by the same process for our cask beers one year later. We use these opportunities to make business decisions which can further reduce our carbon footprint, such as light weighting out bottles. We are also proud to say we send 0% to landfill, have a stretch of beach we keep clean, and house Honey Bees. Also, did we mention Ben Orchard was named as edie’s Sustainabilty Manager of the Year in 2018!
